It is safe to say for myself that finding the right blouse patterns/style has always been a headache for me. Getting bespoke fitted blouse not only cost you a fortune but when they crease on the sides, dammit! It feels like you’ve hit disparity and feel the loss of money in an instant.
Any how, to look regal in a saree you should get the thumb rule right – PERFECT FITTED BLOUSE FOR YOUR BODY TYPE.
The wedding season is here and I’m sure that a lot of you ladies out there are waiting to wear a beautiful saree from your closet or best your mum’s closet. Better yet, the to-be brides out there? I know a lot of my reader’s have been searching for Marathi Lagna Poshak ie. Marathi Wedding Dress/Ensemble and this is going to be an integral part of planning the look too.
There is a charm to getting your own blouse stitched and wearing a traditional saree with all the jewellery and accessories out there. But, pairing it with the right blouse, will make or break the deal for you.
There is a science to all of this. Believe me! Symmetry and colour combinations/contracts do the trick for you. They create an illusion of style. Something that you’ve put in a lot of effort it and also something that gives you the best fit. But let’s first understand the right designs for each of our body types shall we?
Large Bust = Deep Back Neck, Plain In Front
I know a lot of women with large busts always feel insecure about their body and also the fact that they don’t know where to draw the line for skin show. But, let’s make it simple for you – deep back’s always always in trend. So go for a deep neck and a regular normal plain front.
You can go for which ever patterns you like from leaf neck to V neck. Your pick. Also go for a longer length of the blouse because not only will it make you torso look narrow around your waist, but also as the back is deep, make sure your front neck isn’t wide because so that your blouse won’t slip and you won’t feel uncomfortable. Any weight loss/weight gain will also not be a problem when it comes to adjusting the blouse.
P.S. Sleeveless deep V necks look extremely regal on you too. If you are ok with a little cleavage showing. The vintage 90’s blouses? Do you recall? Like that.

Small Bust = Chinese Collar or Halter Neck or Spaghetti /One Shoulder
The exact opposite of above. Again, so many women are so conscious of their bodies because they have small bust. It’s always the case that the grass looks greener on the other side. Now, even if you have small bust, theres a way to not only accentuate what you have but also create an illusion that torso is beautiful with its natural curves. Chinese collar may not be every woman’s favourite, but it’s always an option to consider if you are going to some place formal.
As far as functions are concerned, go all out and wear a halter neck or a spaghetti strap blouse. These will draw attention to your neck and elongate it, while getting a sneak peak of your back. Super fun! One might even consider one shoulder blouses. They are the most trendy piece of blouse you can ever have in my opinion. Pair it with the right saree and you are good to go.
Make sure the length of your blouse isn’t too long or it’ll make you look flat and narrow. So just be mindful of where should the blouse be ending.

Broad shoulders – Boat Neck and Avoid Short Sleeves (Off-Shoulder Blouse Too!)
Women with broad shoulders always tend to be in a tricky position because its very easy to go side ways when it comes to the selection of the blouse pattern for one. The best bet that you can never go wrong with is a boat neck. It elongates your necks and makes your décolletage look extremely elegant. I don’t know, but you must have surely seen Princess Daina or Grace Kelly’s pictures somewhere or the other. Even Jackie Kennedy for that matter.. . They’ve dawned a boat neck blouses/garments on multiple occasions. There’s something about this that makes you look dainty.
Even off-shoulder blouse would look fantastic on you. A good way to narrow down the vision to the beauty of having such stunning shoulders. Mind you! Do not go for these styles and opt for short sleeves. Thats a major no no! It will immediately cut you torso into half and make you look oddly shaped. So just be mindful of that.

Petite Frame – Square or Rectangular Neck (Strapless Blouse? For Sure!)
Ah! The plight of every 5ft 2inch Indian woman should I say? Lol. Not trying to be narcissistic but you know what? The best things in life always come in small packaging. Its true! Think of diamonds 🙂
Being petite is not really something one can address with a blouse, apart from the fact that the length of your blouse can really make you look taller or shorter. So make sure you do a good trial test with the tailor and get it fixed at that because the saree will anyway make you look taller + heels are always the best friend here.
Apart from the obvious, somehow.. . I do not know why but square and rectangular necks really look stunning on petite women. Truth be told? On any one. But because of this cut of the blow, the attention is always draw up from the neck to your face, thereby camouflaging your height. It looks very modern and chic too to say the least. Very cropped-top-esq vibe.
P.S. Sleeveless could really look great on you. Including a tube top/strapless blouse too. May be try it once and let me know? The thin strap sleeveless blouse. Not the thick strap one please? Not needed.

Flabby Arms – Deep Neck Neck and 3/4 th Sleeves (Off-Shoulder Blouse Too!)
I know the struggle, cause I’ve been these. Not to mention the wrong blouse styles have also given me rashes on my inner arm. It’s been crazy. Any how, flabby arms? Not to worry. After much trail and error this is truly my secret – deep neck and 3/4th sleeves. You can also go for a closed neck in front and have this entourage going on at the back. Something on the lines of Deepika Padukone in Sabhya Sachi Collection. It is very regal and the three forth sleeves the stop the eye from going any further than where it stops. It’s a great way to look like you have longer and leaner arms.
I’d say even off-shoulder would look fabulous on you! Just try it out once and tell me how you feel. It’s glamorous? Sure!

Long Neck – Chinese Collar or High Neck (Closed Neck)
Long neck has always been my dream. Any jewellery you put on them, makes them look like a swan. Gorgeous! But when it comes to blouse styles for your saree, nothing absolutely nothing beats a Bandh Gala ie. Closed Neck blouse for you. Super regal and the perfect way to show off your features. It really works for any function, be it office or party. Makes you look extremely put together not having to worry about your blouse at all because you are secured from all sides. It’s like wearing a closed neck cropped t-shirt. Simple and elegant.
Chinese collar/Mandarin Collar is another hit. But if it’s your taste, go for it. No stopping you cause again it is going to make you look spectacular!

Hip Heavy – Halter Neck
Curvy ladies out there! Pear shaped beauties! Nothing, literally nothing look more perfect on you like a Halter Neck. It just balances you out to the eye. Again length of your blouse is key or else it will look like you have no waist. And we for sure don’t want that.
There can’t be much to say based purely on your heavy hips. Hence, you should check out which other features you have from the above list and pick any of those style as they are sure to suit you like perfection.
Skinny Arms – Puff Sleeves
Puff sleeves are the cutest and the only type of people who can pull them off like no other are ladies with slim arms. Do you remember Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit Nene in Devdas? Wow! Those puffed sleeve blouses were a trend setter. You can literally go with any combination you like as far as your neck and back are concerned. However, puff sleeves is your golden ticket to style.
P.S. It is also a very popular yet a very unique style amongst brides I’ve realised. Apart from 3/4th sleeves and 1/2 sleeves. It’s always fun to be something other than the usual.

That’s about it guys. I hope this guide helps. I didn’t want to get into the colour choices and embroidery depth for each body type because its a personal choice. Just trying to provide an easier perspective, in case if you are lost for choice.
I always recommend getting tailor made garments as opposed to ready made blouses or pre-stitched sarees. Sure they have their own charm and are super convenient too. But if you have got the time to spare and an occasion worthy of this little effort to go to your tailor and get a bespoke blouse. Do that. You are one of a kind, so why not wear things which are one of a king and made just for you too. Say bye to fast fashion!
